Vijayakanth asserts to oust DMK in 2011 by forming alliance
DMDK leader Vijayakanth asserted during his Vandavasi by-election campaign that he will not allow DMK to return to power in 2011 assembly elections and he will form alliance to that effect.
During his two day campaign in Vandavasi constituency in support of his party candidate N.Janardhanan, he addressed gatherings in Several villages and Vandavasi town.
During his speeches he exhorted people to not to accept money to decide who should represent them in assembly. “If you accept Rs.500 for a vote, they will robe people of Rs.500 crore” he said.
He complained that the constituency is lacking good roads, health facilities etc. While not giving any specific promise to voters he asked them to give him a chance “to espouse people’s cause, to question the rulers”.
“I will not allow Karunanidhi to return to power in 2011 and I will form alliance to fulfill this task” he said.

Vandavasi by election: PMK shows Volte-face
It campaigns against AIADMK, DMDK
PMK's voice insisting its loyalists and cadres to opt for 49(O) in Vandavasi by election, instead of voting for any party, reached its diminuendo.
Top functionaries including former union minister Ponnusamy, Peranamallur MLA and Deputy General Secretary Ethiroli Maniyan and District Secretary Mannappan are camping in villages of this assembly constituency for couple of days and insist their party men and sympathizers to not to vote for AIADMK or DMDK. While not insisting on opting 49(O) they leave the option of voting to any candidate other than those of AIADMK and DMDK. This falls short of directly asking to vote for DMK, though the functionaries know well that it almost means supporting DMK.
While there is no official announcement about this change of stand, PMK office bearers take no efforts to hide the development. Party people are visiting every village and meet the party men to convey this message from “Ayya”. The top functionaries while going to villages take concerned block secretary and other influential persons of the region with them.
This development is reportedly taken by PMK founder Ramadoss contrasting from its earlier positions vis-a-vis by elections: disputing the infallibility of Electronic Voting Machines and abstain from by-election; Making loud charges about cash distribution among voters and decline to participate in elections; and finally resolution to campaign among people and party cadres to excise 49 (O) option expressing “unwillingness to vote for any of the contesting candidates”.

Ours is a golden age like that of monarchs: says ‘Princess’ Kanimozhi
‘DMK’s crown princess’ and poet Kanimozhi made a reference to (mythical) golden ages of monarchs in the past and juxtaposed present DMK government in the state led by her father M.Karunanidhi, with them. She made this reference during her electioneering for Vandavasi by elections on 3-4 December 2009.
She also said that DMK government transformed TamilNadu into a hunger-free state with the help Re.1 a kg of rice scheme.
Excerpts from her speechs:
“We have read about golden ages of monarchs. But we see one such golden age with our own eyes in the present DMK rule under the leadership of M.Karunanidhi, who repelled hunger and famine from TamilNadu with the help of Re.1 a kg of rice scheme. No other state in the nation executes such a scheme. While news abound on the farmers committing suicides in other states in the nation, DMK government waived debts of farmers to the tune of Rs.7,000 Cr. (and thus saved farmers of the state from such a catastrophe)”.
“Parties which lost confidence on people and boycotted previous by elections and let people down, now come here to contest in Vandavasi. It is time for people to reject the parties which rejected them.
Even when recuperating from a backbone surgery in hospital, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi was busy preparing (TN government's) budget which featured health insurance scheme for people (Kalaignar Kappeettu Thittam). On the contrast there are some parties and their leaders who lost confidence on people in the face of mere electoral debacle".
"You have these two kinds of people. To whom you are going to vote?” she asked and asserted that people are wiser.

Thandarampattu becomes 7th Taluk of T’malai dist.
Chengam taluk was bifurcated and Thandarampattu has been added as 7th taluk of Tiruvannamalai district on 26 November 2007. TamilNadu Revenue minister I Periyasamy inaugurated the new taluk in a function held at Thandarampattu. Minister also opened the taluk office in a rental building and assured that there would be no problem in getting allocation for new buildings for the taluk office. “Though it is mandatory to get nod from election commission before creating a new taluk since constituency demarcation excise is underway, it’s only because of the will showed by our CM the new taluk came a reality” Periyasamy said in his address. Minister heaped praise on district administration for being first in the state in terms of number of house site pattas distributed to the occupants. He also released a booklet containing names of 6348 beneficiaries who would get house site patta in the function. He also flagged off ten new buses in completely new routes in the newly created taluk. Food minister EV Velu, who represents the same constituency, read out the message from Chief Minister M Karunanidhi congratulating the new taluk. Velu also said that creation of taluk is an answer to the plight of the people from far flung areas like Vanapuram, Sathakuppam, Beemarapatti in accessing taluk center Chengam. These places are more than 50 km away from Chengam and have no proper transport connectivity. For example people from Beemarapatti would have to walk upto Malayanur Chekkadi and then catch three buses to reach Chenagam, Velu said. District collector Sathyabratha Sahoo in his speech said that creation of the new taluk paved way for opening several taluk level offices at Thandarampattu. District Revenue Officer G Thamarai, MLAs K Pichandi, Sivanandham, Ethiroli Maniyan, SP Jayaraman, PS Vijayakumar were among the participants. First thasildar of the new taluk Kesava Barathi thanked the gathering.

Concern for children groomed in the forest
A symposium of difference, not in terms of subject discussed but the venue, held inside forest near Tiruvannamalai recently.
‘Cuckoo’ a movement for children which organized the event named after the meet as ‘Kaanula’ (jungle stride). A team consisting people from diverse walks of life from cinematographer, lyricist, tribal leader, artist, writers, environmentalists to many social enthusiasts started its stride from Theethandapattu, a village between Tiruvannamalai and Chengam. They mounted Jawadu hills from that point for quite some time to reach a serene location called ‘Puli Madu’ (meaning ‘Tiger Mound’). There they discussed how to recover today’s children who were denied to nurture an inner world liberally; who could not live in youthful hilarity natural of tender ones due to crushing load of education driven not by natural instinct to learn the life but by greedy and careerist goals. They have discussed how far they can contribute to the recovery of cultural, artistic base land of life removed from beneath the foot of children. They came to a conclusion that they should take lively arts in the form of drama, story telling, good short films to the children of some particular region in a continuous basis. By doing this, they concluded, they can expose children to a cozy, liberal, morale boosting and artistic side of the life which would sensitize children on how to live with conscious of what a world they are in, what are all the future challenges they might have to face etc. In nutshell they decided to contribute to the strengthening of emotional inner world of children of today to prevail up on the ‘future shock’ which is in store for them.
VP Gunasekaran, president of TamilNadu Tribes Association, urged the gathering that children should be sensitized that forest are their primitive homeland and their lore on forest to be enhanced.
Govinda, an environmentalist and English national, said that he consider Tiruvannamalai as his nation. When his wife was about to give birth to a child some years ago he planted 20 trees in Tiruvannamalai which then evolved into a greening movement, he added. “I nurture the memories of rain drops that fell down the sky which gave me solace during that tense moment. Rain drops are tears of sky for the plights of mother earth. Unfolding of each foliage is a delivery” he said.
Cinematographer ‘Wide Angle’ Ravishankar, lyricist Na Muthukumar and Spanish theatre artist Alberto were among those who took part. Cuckoo organizer Sivaraj, Thamba Peter and Kumar Ambayiram have organized the event.

Arsoning Dalits' houses
8 dalit houses reduced to ash in arson
When minority Arunthathiyar people (cobbler commnity, a sub caste of dalits) of Chellanguppam village near Vettavalam in Tiruvannamalai district attempted to identify themselves with DMDK party (floated by actor Vijayakanth) and erect flag post in village public land they end up facing wrath of Caste Hindus (Most of them from Vanniyar caste).
Not only the flag mast they erected with the permission of panchayat president Muniyan was felled by oppressive castes but their humble huts were also set on fire notwithstanding police posted in the village. Police arrested morethan 25 people from caste hindus after registering cases against them under Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/ST Act, besides framing under various sections of Indian Penal Code.
Caste Hindus who were in various political parties opposed the idea of erecting flag mast (Read as political freedom of dalits) in one voice. Meanwhile, after felling the flag mast women SHG members from caste Hindus tried to set up a shed there which created tension again. Opposition shown by dalit members for this shed was said to be the reason behind arsoning. SP V Balakrishnan gave a visit to the spot and stayed there all throgh the night after arsoning and ensrued all the culprits were booked under SC/ST atrocities act. However, interestingly, DMDK whose party flag was obvious epicenter of the issue never intervened or protested against those felled it. Some district functionaries of the party gave a visit to the village a few days after the incident only to distribute certain things such as rice, cloths to victims.
